I don’t know why I decided to become an artist. All I knew was that I really enjoyed art and other subjects such as math never got me excited like art did. I never put as much effort into anything like I did with art. I think artists are a bit like magicians. They can turn nothing into something, they can bring things from your imagination into the real world. As a younger man that's what my work wanted to be, wildly imaginative however I’ve realized I am not the most imaginative or creative. This did not deter me from becoming an artist, I simply changed direction. Now as a twenty six year old I focus on things of my time, the conspiracies, the wrong doings, and entertainment. One of the most important aspects of my work is entertainment, as political as it might be my work aims to be entertaining. It is challenging first off to even decide to pursue a career in the art field, everyone is so worried about you. Mainly financially but to me a true artist shouldn’t be worried about making a profit unless you are a commercial artist. To make things that other people enjoy and relate to all the while being able to financially support yourself and others is a challenge to say the least. To do that successfully I believe takes a lot of work and some luck because the world is so saturated with artists. Going back to my main point, through my art I want to spread awareness about injustice and strange happenings nationally and internationally, while still being entertaining /captivating. I want it to reach anyone and everyone because I believe it is important for people to know what's going on not just locally but all over the world. I want for people to be informed about what other humans are going through. I want this to bring us closer as a world wide community, and as members of the same species we should be banding together rather than drifting apart.
My goals and ambitions as an artist have always been grand but as the years pass they have become more realistic. My ambition as an artist has always been to become a household name. That is still my goal however as I said before the years have humbled me and now I’m leaning more toward just being able to make enough money so that I can support a family comfortably as well as to help spread awareness on topics I believe are important. Even humbled I seek grandeur and something I am unwilling to compromise is my career choice. Even if I have to work at McDonalds in order to pay bills and rent I will always be an artist. Something else that I will not compromise on is speaking out against and bringing attention to the injustice in this country and in countries around the world. I just hope I don’t end up like John Barnett.
Artists in my mind shouldn't be very wealthy because then they will lose their drive, their reason to make art. Money changes people usually for the worst, this being said I am not mad that some artists are very wealthy and I too would like to become wealthy through my art, however artists should make art because they want to make art not money. As I just said I would like to generate wealth through my art, however that is not as important to me as being remembered because of my art. Truly generational artists don’t become spectacular by making art with the goal of making thousands and thousands of dollars. Whether or not they deserve it is something else. Once they get it they aren't the same person, their motivation is different and because of this their ability to make the same or better art is thwarted. This is true of musicians as well, some that come to mind are The Weekend, Post Malone, and Kanye West. I personally really like the Weekend's new music but for his long-time fans it just doesn’t hit the same. They say that they think when he was addicted to drugs and homeless his music was incredible and way better than any of his new albums. The same can be said for Post Malone back when he was getting hammered off of Bud Light and depressed his music was phenomenal but now that he has lots of money, a beautiful girlfriend, is engaged and has a child his last couple of albums have been flops. Lastly, Kanye West, an artist that even made a song called “I love Kanye,” where one of his lyrics is “I miss the old Kanye.” Back when he was an up and coming artist and even after being a successful rapper he had all bops no flops but now he has millions of dollars and I will admit in this case I don’t think just the money is what caused his fall from stardom. The money I believe is a part of it but just recently he dropped a new album and it is actually very good. He is my exception because he really did start out and maybe still to this day really does love music and has an undeniable talent for it. These artists, although not the same type of artist as me, have had a great impact on my practice. I admire them as not just artists but as people. At the end of the day, that is all anyone is, celebrity or not.
Materials that I work with include whatever I can use in order to create that specific thing. This can be wood, metal, clay bricks, paint, cement, a computer, etc. I don’t want to limit myself to one or a couple objects because why would I? I use cheap materials and expensive materials. The only thing that matters to me is if the piece comes out the way I want it. I find that I want to use all kinds of materials to explore what their capabilities are, and how I can use them to make something that you wouldn’t think they can be used to make.
In conclusion I hope to continue to grow and achieve mainstream status. In order to achieve my goals I will continue to do research and keep my eyes and ears open. I have chosen this path so I will follow it to the end, again I don’t know why I became an artist but I do know that these hands were made to create so that's what I’ll do.
